You don't need to build anything to benefit from MCP. Many applications let you connect existing servers.
1. Check Your Application
Look in your AI assistant, IDE or coding agent's settings for MCP, connectors or integrations.
2. Choose a Server
Start with something useful and low-risk: documentation lookup, read-only access to your notes, or a web fetch tool. Prefer official servers from the service's vendor.
3. Connect
- Remote servers: usually add a URL and sign in through a browser.
- Local servers: add a configuration entry with the command to launch the server and any required environment variables.
4. Try It
Ask something that needs the server: "What are my open tickets assigned to me?" Watch which tools the assistant calls.
5. Review Permissions
Keep approval prompts on for actions that change things. Read what each call will do before approving.
Safety Tips
- Don't install servers from unknown sources.
- Give credentials the minimum permissions needed.
- Disconnect servers you no longer use.
- Be aware that content fetched by tools can try to manipulate the assistant.
