Multi-Turn Prompting and Conversation Design

Getting the best from a conversation with a model: building context, correcting course and knowing when to start fresh.

Editorial team 1 min read

Chatting with a model over several turns lets you refine results — if you manage the conversation well.

Build Context Early

Start with the goal, audience and constraints. Later turns can then focus on refinements.

Give Specific Feedback

"Make it better" is weak. "Shorten the second paragraph, remove the jargon in the third, and add the deadline" is actionable.

Correct Misunderstandings Directly

If the model has misunderstood, state the correction clearly rather than hoping it adjusts. Explain what was wrong and why.

Keep Track of Versions

Ask for complete revised versions when making several edits, so you don't have to reassemble pieces.

Watch for Drift

Long conversations accumulate context, and earlier instructions can fade or conflict with later ones. Periodically restate key requirements.

Know When to Start Fresh

If a conversation has gone off track, start a new one with a better initial prompt that incorporates what you learned. It's often faster than repairing.

Summarise for Continuity

For work spanning sessions, ask the model to summarise decisions and current state, then begin the next session with that summary.

For Applications

In products, design conversations deliberately: what the assistant asks, how it confirms understanding, and how it recovers from errors.

Role Prompting: When It Helps and When It Doesn't
