Coding agents are among the heaviest users of MCP. Servers extend what an agent can see and do beyond the local repository.
Common Integrations
- Issue trackers: read tickets and update status.
- Documentation: fetch up-to-date library and API docs.
- Databases: inspect schemas and run read-only queries.
- Observability: read error reports and logs while debugging.
- Design tools: read design specifications.
- Browsers: automate a browser to test web applications.
Configuration
Servers are typically configured per user or per project. Project-level configuration lets a whole team share the same integrations — checked into the repository without secrets.
Keep Context Lean
Every connected server adds tool definitions to the context. Connect what you use; some harnesses load tool details on demand to reduce the cost.
Safety
- Prefer read-only access, especially for production databases.
- Use development or staging credentials where possible.
- Keep approvals on for write actions.
- Be aware that tickets, docs and logs can contain injected instructions.
Team Practice
Document which servers are approved and what credentials they need.
