As AI-generated text, images, audio and video become indistinguishable from human-made content, tools for identifying origin become important.
Watermarking
Hidden signals embedded in generated content that detection tools can identify.
- Images and audio: imperceptible patterns in pixels or sound.
- Text: subtle statistical patterns in word choices.
Limitations: watermarks can often be weakened by editing, compression, paraphrasing or cropping, and only work if the generator applies them.
Content Credentials
Standards such as C2PA attach signed metadata describing how content was created and edited, from capture device to publication. They show provenance for authentic content as well as AI-generated content.
Limitations: metadata can be stripped, and adoption across devices and platforms is incomplete.
AI Detection Classifiers
Tools that guess whether text or images are AI-generated. They produce false positives and negatives; don't use them as sole evidence for serious decisions, such as accusing students of cheating.
Practical Use
- Label AI-generated content you publish.
- Preserve content credentials in your workflows.
- Combine provenance signals with other verification.
