Midyear total population estimates from the World Bank's World Development Indicators, indicator SP.POP.TOTL. The data is wide: one row per country or aggregate (regions, income groups, World), one column per year from 1960.

API_SP.POP.TOTL_DS2_en_csv_v2_….csv— the data. The first four lines are metadata; the header is on line 5.Metadata_Country_….csv— region and income group for each country code, handy for separating countries from aggregates.Metadata_Indicator_….csv— the indicator's definition and sources.
The World Bank regenerates the zip when the indicator is updated, so the link always gives the latest release.
